Engineer Rui Vieira Born in São Martinho, Funchal, on March 29, 1926, Rui Manuel da Silva Vieira graduated in Agricultural Engineering at the Instituto Superior de Agronomia (Lisbon) in 1950. He worked at the Agricultural Station and taught at the Escola Practical Elementar de Agricultura. In the 1960s he was a member of the National Assembly and between February 1971 and April 1974 he chaired the General Board of the Autonomous District of Funchal. He was a member of the Regional Development Board with the Ministry of Agriculture and later, in the 1980s, he was Regional Director of Planning. After retiring, he took on the role of advisor to the Vice Presidency of the Regional Government and in 1994 became a member of the European Parliament. and distinctions. Among his works are "Flora da Madeira. The interest of Macaronesian endemic plants" and "Flora da Madeira, Vascular plants naturalized in the archipelago of Madeira".
