War memorial for the 87 francs fallen in the German-French War of 1870 71. It was built in 1902 at the same time as a national monument of the German fraternity in memory of the unification. The monument is a 33 m high (100 ft) round temple at the top of the Göpelskuppe and is designed by the architect Wilhelm Kreis. Nine huge columns with tall narrow windows in between form a monumental hall. The columns are held together by an architrave, in which the motto of the German fraternity 'EHRE, FREIHEIT, VATERLAND' (honor, freedom, fatherland) can be read in giant letters. The architrave is crowned by the elaborate cornice, from which three steps lead to the tambour. On this rise six huge corbels with the heads of the Arminius, Charlemagne, Luther, Albrecht Dürer, Goethe and Beethoven. Then the helmet follows with nine eagles wearing a Germanic crown as the highest point. In the hall is a small museum.
