The Bohemian Club was founded in San Francisco in 1872 as a private mens club `by and for journalists`, later, artists and musicians were allowed to be honorary members. Then business entrepreneurs were also allowed to join. The clubs name dates to the 1850`s, when cultured, young journalists described themselves as `bohemians`. The bronze relief plaque on the Post Street side of the building depicts fifteen character from books written by Club member Brete Harte, and done by fellow member Jo Mora. Above the entrance door on the Taylor Street side is a masonry relief of an owl, their mascot with initials, with wording from the Shakespeare play Midsummers Night Dream, implies to leave your outside concerns outside, when entering. As seen 5 19 October 2022.
