Pictured is a black vulture eating a dead python in the grass along the roadside in the Everglades National Park in Florida. The binomial name is Coragyps atratus. The black vulture is also known as the American black vulture, Mexican vulture, zopilote, urubu, or gallinazo. The black vulture is a scavenger and feeds on carrion but will also opportunistically prey on extremely weakened, sick, elderly, or otherwise vulnerable animals.
