A freshly emerged Black-tailed Skimmer dragonfly has climbed up the stem of a Flag Iris to find some relative safety under the base of the flower head while it waits for its wings to harden. During this time it is highly vulnerable to being eaten by birds, so it remains motionless until it can make its bid for freedom and the sanctuary of the woodland canopy that surrounds its home pool.
