A medieval style bee hotel in the courtyard of an ancient French stone chateau house in Cahors, France. It is a beautiful rustic wooden structure made to give homes to solitary dwelling bees. The French calls it Hotel a Abeilles. Many species of bees are solitary – the do not live in hives but instead construct their own nest. Bee hotels are necessary for a number of different reasons. To begin with bee populations have been on a decline in recent years. Part of the problem is that their natural habitats have been cleared to make way for intensive agriculture. Pesticides have also been instrumental in their decline. The rustic and quaint design of the shelter also makes it an interesting and decorative element in the gardens.
