The river flows along the eastern edge of the Thjorsarhraun lava field, one of the largest lava flows on Earth, which was created in a single eruption since the Ice Age. The Thjorsa is a combination of a flooded, spring-fed and glacial river. The average water flow in Urridafoss Falls is about 350 m3 second, while during the spring melt it can rise to 1000-1500 m3 second. The only Icelandic river with a higher flow is the Olfusa.
