Dahlias are flowers that are bred late. In 1872, the Netherlands received a box of Dahlia tubers sent from Mexico. From a box of Dahlia flower tubers, it turned out that only one tuber managed to flower but it produced beautiful red flowers with pointed flower leaves. Plant experts succeeded in breeding Dahlia which was later named Dahlia juarezii. Dahlia juarezii is the ancestor of all hybrid (cross) Dahlia flowers that exist today.Dahlia plants are food for the larvae of several species of Lepidoptera (types of butterflies). The Dahlia flower is named in honor of the Swedish botanist from the 18th century named Anders Dahl.Dahlia is also the official flower of the city of Seattle, Washington state, United States.
