San Francisco has a rich history of music and musical entertainment going back to the Gold Rush era. This really became a very big industry during the late 1950's when home televisions were becoming more common, and people can see in their own home many of the new pop music icons. And more and more of these pop music icons were from right here in San Francisco. To commemorate this, then mayor Willie Brown in 1997 kicked off the community effort of placing plaques in the Civic Center area to the individuals and groups who have made San Francisco their home, this cities version of Hollywoods Walk of Fame . The Bammie, which stands for Bay Area Music, hosts their own awards, was awarded to Janis Joplin, who rocked to fame with the 1967 Monterey Pops Festival,as the lead singer of Big Brother and the Holding Company. She recorded two albums with Big Brother before going solo. She was such an icon in San Francisco, there is a tree in Golden Gate Park named in her honor, for where she was known to often hang out, singing and with guitar in hand. As seen 23 March 2023.
