Avignon Cathedral and the Palais des Papes in the city of Avignon in southeast France in the department of Vaucluse on the left bank of the Rhone River. Once a fortress and palace, the papal residence was the seat of western Christianity during the 14th century. Since 1995, the Palais des Papes, along with the historic center of Avignon, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
