The Parian marble Athena Giustiniani or Giustiniani Minerva is an Antonine Roman marble copy of a Greek sculpture of Pallas Athena. The sculpture has often been credited with the quality of a cult image rather than a decorative culture trophy. The serpent at Athena's right foot recalls the archaic myth of Erichthonius in his serpent form. The Athena Giustiniani, a Roman copy of a Greek statue of Pallas Athena Vatican Museums. Athena or Athene, often given the epithet Pallas, is an ancient Greek goddess associated with wisdom, handicraft, and warfare who was later syncretized with the Roman goddess Minerva. Her major symbols include owls, olive trees, snakes, and the Gorgoneion.
