The hole in the foreground is the shaft of an ancient copper mine in the Timna valley in Israel. Copper has been mined in the Timna valley since the 6th millennium BCE. Mining peaked in the area during the 14th - 12th centuries BCE when the Egyptians developed a large scale mining industry in the Timna valley.
