These trees are ancient and have been thriving since the Civil War, according to the historians of Chatham Manor, a historic estate in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Chatham Manor was the country estate of a wealthy southern man but became invaluable during America`s Civil War, becoming a hospital for injured Confederate soldiers. The trees have gnarled trunks and show their age.
