The Aluviharaya rock temple is a sacred buddhist temple located in Aluvihare, Matale. The temple is sorrounded by hills and this cave temple is situated 30 kms north of Kandy. The history of the rock temple can be traced back to 3rd century B.C to the kind Devanampiyatissa. This temple has many caves with ancient inscriptions.These caves are having modern wall and ceiling paintings and impressive statues and images of lord buddha. A similar black and white image to this one can be found in the internet captured in 1896.
