One of the biggest dams and the biggest artificial lake in Europe, Alqueva dam represents the dream of an entire region, Alentejo, the driest and hottest in Portugal. Finished in 2002, it is now a national landmark, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Several tourist ventures are currently under construction and are expected to give a new life to this underdeveloped region.
