Veteran English stage and screen actor Sir Alan Bates appears outside the Music Box Theatre in midtown Manhattan after performing his lead role in Fortune's Fool, on March 30, 2002. Bates received his training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London and was knighted by the Queen months prior to his death from pancreatic cancer on December 27, 2003, at the age of 69. In his nearly 5 decade career, he made his first Broadway stop in 1956 in Look Back In Anger. He won both an Olivier and Tony Award for his leading actor work on Butley in the early 1970s. Among his noted film performances were in Women in Love, An Unmarried Woman, Georgy Girl, and Far from the Madding Crowd.
