Agra is a city in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is situated on the banks of the River Yamuna and is a major tourist destination due to its many historical monuments, including the iconic Taj Mahal. Agra was the capital of the Mughal Empire from 1556 to 1648 and is home to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri. Agra is known for its rich cultural heritage and is a popular tourist destination. Agra Fort, also known as Agra’s Red Fort, is a sprawling complex of palaces, mosques and gardens and is a testament to the grandeur of the Mughal Empire. It was the main residence of the emperors of the Mughal Dynasty until the capital shifted to Delhi. The fort can be more accurately described as a walled city. The sandstone walls enclose the Jahangir Palace and the Khas Mahal, audience halls and two very beautiful mosques.
