Fernandina Island, Galapagos, Ecuador is the youngest of the islands, and is covered with hard lava. Pioneer plants grow from seeds blown or deposited by birds in crevices in the lava. as their own dead branches grow, they create beds in which other plants may find it possible to grow, eventually adding new plants ot the island.
