Nobody knows for certain where the term originated. A Hispanic subculture, it represented Zoot suits, extravagant evening dresses, flamboyant public behavior, and broken taboos. It grew in popularity during the swing era. Ultimately, there was a culture clash during World War II that resulted in the 1944 Pachuco Riots.
