A ceremonial elephant is washed by a group of mahouts within the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic complex in Kandy in Sri Lanka. As evening approaches the elephant will then be dressed and parade in the Esala Perahera through the streets of Kandy. The Esala Perahera is held to honour the sacred tooth relic of Lord Buddha enshrined within the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic.
