Stock Photo: A Black Vulture With Spread Wings

ID 262025455 © Ricardnature | Megapixl.com

This is the black vulture, Coragyps atratus species, Cathartidae family. The black vulture has a Nearctic and Neotropical distribution. The black vulture is a scavenger and feeds on carrion. Often seen in large groups near garbage dumps and landfills. Black vultures are often seen in pastures, suburban and urban areas soaring or perched on fence posts or dead trees. This vulture is often seen standing in a spread-winged stance, as in this image. The stance is believed to serve multiple functions: drying the wings, warming the body, and baking off bacteria. Observed at El Remate village garbage dump, Petén, northern Guatemala.
