After the Earthquake and Fire of 1906, because so many buildings had been damaged or totally destroyed, building material was hard to come by. That may be why this building located at 440 Pacific Avenue in San Francisco, some of the lower bricks appear to have been scorched. Although it opened in 1911, probably as a saloon and brothel, they probably had to use salvaged bricks to help finish it.
