The 13 pillars on Olkhon Island are called the serge. This is a Buryat word, it means that a horse can be tied to a pole. But not in the usual everyday sense (although, in it too), but a little wider. These pillars connect the three worlds, represent a kind of world tree. The roots go to the underworld, the tops – to heaven. Therefore, the inhabitants of each of the worlds, passing by, can stop at this place and tie a horse. To do this, three special ring grooves are cut on the pillars. On Olkhon, a place with pillars is sacred. Shamans and ordinary people communicate with spirits through the serge.
