Artisanal Filipino fishermen use a variety of fishing gears and techniques to target and catch a vast amount of species. Whilst some of these methods are quite selective and sustainable, for instance handlines, used to catch tuna. Some othher methods likel blast fishing or cyanide fishing are highly damaging to the environment, specially to coral reefs. Sadly, these methods are still widespread and the efforts to curb them are not completely succesful. Other methods such as FAD-associated purse seine are not per se destructive to the marine environment, but they do have a high percent of juvenile fish bycatch.
