Pictured is one of two `Unmarked Gaves` information plaques on granite stones inside the Freedman`s Cemetery Memorial in Dallas,
Texas. The granite stone and plaque mark the area where approximately 5,000 unmarked graves exist. The memorial is the work of American sculptor and artist David Newton, who was selected for the commission in a national competition. The Cemetery has been in existence since 1861 and there are estimated to be 5,000 unmarked graves. The only two remaining headstones are imbedded in the back of a piece of granite that has a poem carved on it`s surface.
