The Perentie (Varanus giganteus) is the biggest Australian monitor lizard. It can grow to over two metres. Perenties (and other goannas) hibernate during the cold time of the year, from about May to August. Despite its huge the size the Perentie is a rather shy lizard, and it is not a common sight.
