The Taj Mahal is a mausoleum complex commissioned by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan to house the remains of his beloved wife. The famed building was constructed on the southern bank of the Yamuna River in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India. It’s considered one of the most outstanding examples of Mughal architecture, which combined Indian, Persian and Islamic influences. At the center of the complex is the Taj Mahal itself, built of shimmering white marble inlaid with precious and semi precious stones. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983, it remains one of the world’s most celebrated structures and a stunning symbol of India’s rich history. In addition to the Taj Mahal, the complex contains a vast Mughal garden, a mosque, guest house, and the main gateway. The mosque and the guest house are built of red sandstone.
