The lake is a water reservoir which is supplied with surface, precipitation, underground water and is not part of the world`s ocean. Worldwide, the lakes occupy 1.8% of the land surface. The total volume is estimated at 180,000 cubic kilometers. [1] Some large run-off lakes are called `inland seas`, especially if they contain salt water eg the Caspian Sea, the Dead Sea, the Salt Sea. Exploring the lakes is a science known as limnology.
