St. Voivodes Cathedral from Târgu Jiu Prefecture Square. Located in Victoriei Square, in front of the Communal Palace, is the foundation of merchants Dobre Sîrbu and Radu Cupetu whose portraits can be seen in the narthex. The construction was made between 1748-1764, the building being also known as the Church of the Merchants, the Princely Church and even the `Jii` Church. The plan of the church is in the shape of a cross. The Romanian Orthodox Church is one of the autocephalous churches of Orthodox Christianity. Most Romanian ethnics belong to the Romanian Orthodox Church, but the church also has believers of other nationalities.
