One of the most history rich places in Romania, the Castle of Suceava was the city where the former rulers of Moldavia, the voivodes, used to rule from. Quite a fortress it was. The towers are ruined, and there can be seen a water level on the walls, which are still a more than a few meters tall. The most iconic leader was Saint Stefan cel Mare, the landlord who reigned for almost half a century (47 years). Fighthind many battles at disadvantage he managed to win most of them, a feat only matched by the greatest tactical minds to have ever lived. For each battle he won, he raised a monastery. A few of those monasteries are now UNESCO heritage. Few people know that his cousin was none other than Vlad the Impaler, who is better known as Dracula in Western cultures.
