Avenches is a small town in the French-speaking part of Switzerland which had a glorious past: during the Roman occupation, Aventicum (the old name of Avenches) was the capital of the Helvetia Province. The Roman Amphitheatre, sitting at the foot of the medieval city is still in used today for different types of shows. In summer, a famous Opera Festival takes place here. HDR image.
