Paris (France). The Arc de Triomphe stands in the centre of the Place Charles de Gaulle-de l’Étoile and it is the western end of the Champs-Élysées. It was built to commemorate the military victories of Napoleon Bonaparte. In 1920 the Arc was dedicated to the Unknown Soldier, burying under a slab of stone the body of a soldier fallen during the Great War. Today it is the symbol of the Republic. Detail of the sculpture situated on the main facade of the right pillar.
