Noirmoutier is a nature reserve, much loved by many species of birds, and abounds with traditional skills such as salt extraction and oyster and shellfish banks, which give the island its unique tastes and smells. In spring many small islands are occupied by enormous amounts of breeding birds, such as here the Mediterranean gulls Ichthyaetus melanocephalus. This gull breeds in colonies in large reed beds or marshes, or on islands in lakes; where its population is small, it nests in black-headed gull colonies. They are eating fish, worms, scraps, insects, offal and carrion.
