This line can be avoided by paying for an escorted tour or paying ticket resellers for instant line access-the cost is about $75.00 US dollars per person which is at least 2-3 times as much as a ticket bought waiting in the four hour line. Huge crowds pack the colosseum most of the year. Maybe in the wintertime the crowds diminish somewhat. An escorted tour is a good idea if your willing to spend the money since you get a tour guide who can provide a lot of information that you might miss.
