This lion head is part of a sculptural group in tribute to Carlos Pellegrini, former president of Argentina between 1890-1892. The monument was made by french sculptor Jules-Félix Coutan (1848-1939). Was inaugurated on 1914, and since then dominates the Carlos Pellegrini square that is located between Alvear Av., Arroyo St. and Libertad St., in Retiro neighborhood, Buenos Aires. The monument is made with Carrara marble and bronze. It has an imposing base that symbolizes the bow of a ship. The lion head - in the picture - represents the figurehead. A statue of Carlos Pellegrini is on the ship, holding a flag with his left hand, and expressing with his right hand his strong will to defend it through the institutions created by him. On the rear part, a female figure is the Republic, holding in her hands the symbol of unity and the national coat of arms. The sculptures on the sides symbolize the Justice and the fight for progress, industry and commerce.
