Jataí bees, also called indigenous bees, are native to Brazil. They belong to the meliponid species, scientifically known as Tetragonisca angustula. The word “jataí” is of indigenous origin and comes from the Tupi language “yata’ i”. Melipona is a word of Greek origin, méli = honey, ponos = work. Jataís are tiny, stingless bees that are highly coveted by beekeepers. Often found at altitudes above 500 meters. They produce honey of exceptional qualities: fine, smooth, slightly sour, which makes it different from other honeys. Due to its medicinal properties, it is indicated in the treatment of colds, bronchitis, glaucoma and cataracts, in addition to being bactericidal and acting in wound healing. Like all apidae, jataís have an organized society divided into: workers, drones and queen.
