Iwahig prison and penal farm was set up by the Americans in 1902 just 20 minutes south of Puerto Princessa. The majority are minimum security prisoners and are not locked up. Instead, they live in dormitories and work on one of the many agricultural projects located within the prison farm. Prisoners who might be at risk of escaping are confined to maximum security areas, where they are monitored.
