Despite India’s high level of economic growth, the majority of it’s population in rural areas still struggle with hunger and malnutrition. India has more people suffering hunger-more than 200 million-than any other country in the world. Addressing a joint session of Parliament on June 4,2009,India’s President Prativa Patil announced that India would soon pass a radical new National Food security Act which would for the first time guarantee a minimum quality of rice, wheat and cereals those living below the poverty line in rural and urban areas.
