Elvas is a Portuguese municipality located in the district of Portalegre. It is a fortified town to defend the border with Spain which is only 11 km away on the road from Lisbon to Madrid. Today it is a thriving manufacturing center, commercial and agricultural center of a hilly area covered with orchards and olive groves in the region of Alentejo. Its historic center is closed by a series of fortifications that bear witness to the strategic role of the military had in the past.
