Dogwood blossoms, Cornus florida, in spring. The flowers are thought to illustrate a Christian story that the tree once upon a time grew straight and tall and was used to crucify Christ. The tree begged God for help and was made to grow crooked ever after. The flowers have what resembles a crown of thorns in the center, four petals like a crucifix, and a mark at the end of each petal reminiscent of a nail hole.
